OLED vs QLED vs Mini-LED: Which TV Type Should You Buy?
Quick answer
OLED lights each pixel individually, giving very dark blacks and wide viewing angles, which suits dim rooms and movies. QLED and Mini-LED are LCD TVs lit from behind, and they are often the better fit for bright rooms. Check the model number and specifications rather than the marketing name.
How each type works
OLED panels produce their own light at every pixel, so a pixel can turn fully off. That is what allows very dark blacks.
QLED is a quantum-dot layer added to an LCD TV to improve colour. The picture is still lit by a backlight.
Mini-LED is also an LCD TV, but its backlight uses many more, smaller LEDs, which can be dimmed in zones for better control of bright and dark areas.
What each does best
These are general tendencies. Individual models differ a great deal, so compare reviews and specifications for the exact set.
- OLED: deepest blacks, wide viewing angles, strong for dark-room movie watching.
- QLED: often brighter, which helps in a sunlit room, and available across many price points.
- Mini-LED: improved contrast over a standard LED backlight and often high brightness, though bright objects on dark backgrounds can still show a halo.
Trade-offs to know about
OLED panels can, over a long time and with static content such as a channel logo left on for hours, show image retention or burn-in. Many people never notice it with varied viewing, but it is worth considering if the TV will display the same image for long periods.
LCD-based TVs generally cannot match an OLED's per-pixel blacks, and the quality of their local dimming varies from model to model.
Match the TV to the room and the use
For a bright living room used during the day, brightness matters most. For a dim room and film watching, black level and contrast matter most. For gaming, check the refresh rate and which HDMI ports support the features your console uses.
On Black Friday: model numbers, not names
TVs in the same line can share a name while differing in panel, processor or ports, and some models are made for particular retailers. Compare the model number with the manufacturer's specifications before deciding one listing is a better deal.
Size matters as much as panel type: measure the distance from your seat and the space available before choosing.
