Noise cancelling, passive isolation and what each is good for
Active noise cancelling uses microphones and electronics to reduce steady background sound such as engines and air conditioning. Passive isolation relies on the fit and materials of the earcups or ear tips to block sound.
Noise cancelling is most useful for travel and noisy commutes, and it generally costs more and uses battery. It is less effective against sudden sounds. For quieter settings, good passive isolation may be enough.
Over-ear vs in-ear: fit, comfort and battery life
Over-ear headphones are generally more comfortable for long listening and often have larger batteries, but they are bulkier. Earbuds are compact and portable, and how well they fit varies a lot from person to person.
Fit affects both comfort and sound, so check the retailer's return policy in case the shape does not suit you. Battery life is stated by the manufacturer for specific settings, and it is usually shorter with noise cancelling on or at high volume.
Phone compatibility and wireless codecs
Bluetooth headphones use codecs to send audio, and which codecs are used depends on both the headphones and your phone. The quality you get is limited by what both support, and some features, such as quick pairing, only work within certain phone ecosystems.
Check the specifications for the supported codecs, the Bluetooth version and any features that depend on your phone.
Buying from authorized sellers (avoiding grey-market and fake listings)
A price far below other listings can signal a third-party seller, a different region's model or a counterfeit. Where you can, buy from the manufacturer, an established retailer, or a seller the retailer identifies as authorized.
The listing should show the seller, the model number and the warranty. If any of these is missing or unclear, treat the offer with caution.
Warranty and opened-earbud return policies
Some retailers limit returns on opened earbuds and other in-ear products for hygiene reasons, while others accept them within a return window. Read the policy for the specific retailer before you buy.
Confirm the length and terms of the manufacturer's warranty and whether it applies in Canada.
How we choose the deals on this page
We include active deals in our Electronics category that are priced in Canadian dollars.
For this page we also look for product names that contain words such as headphones, earbuds or headset, and we leave out titles that clearly describe accessories such as stand-alone cases, stands, ear tips or cables. This keeps the list focused but can still miss a product whose title does not use one of those terms.
Deals are ordered using the information we have: a badge where one has been set, the discount where a retailer's regular price is listed, how recently we checked the deal, and then price.
Deals are added by us or imported from affiliate retailer feeds, and we show a last-checked time only where we have recorded one. We do not use price-history data and cannot promise that a listed price is the lowest available anywhere. Prices, availability and terms are set by retailers and can change.
